The Lost Art Of Authenticity & How To Get It Back

Authenticity IS Critical

Authenticity is critical now more than ever.. “He was so sincere!” “She is just so genuine!” These phrases are tossed around a lot today as a way of expressing approval. The meaning is simple, if you are sincere, or authentic, you aren’t trying to hide what you think. You do not pander to the audience. Or in more common terms, you are letting people know how you really feel.

All of this is part of a general backlash against things that are heavily produced and meant to manipulate people into a certain line of thinking.

Be Authentic

Naturally, this has lead not to the end of manipulation but rather changed the way it’s done. If a politician wants to appear authentic, he loses his tie and doesn’t button the top button or two of his shirt. A boss will participate in casual Friday or show up for a beer after work. Such things can be honest, but often, they are done to create an air of authenticity rather than the real thing.

“I know of nothing more valuable, when it comes to the all-important virtue of authenticity than simply being who you are.”

Doing “Authenticity”?

So, how does one “do authenticity”? It seems an odd question doesn’t it? Doesn’t seem like something you really shouldn’t have to think about, does it? If that is where your mind went, then you are on the right track. The simple fact is that being authentic means not thinking too much about it. If you want people to think you are authentic, then be authentic. Speak your mind and be honest. In reality, authenticity isn’t something you “do”. Authenticity is part of your “being”. It comes from the very character and nature of who you are.

Be Real…But Put A Filter On It

There are a couple caveats here. Being honest doesn’t mean speaking without a filter. It doesn’t mean being a jerk or being vulgar. Being authentic means not being afraid to voice your opinions. You’re still responsible for presenting them in a reasonable way.

Key here is to avoid pandering. Don’t just tell people what you think they want to hear. It will probably work for a while but if you do it too much people will figure it out once they start to compare notes.

We are human beings. NOT human thinkings, human doings, or human feelings. Our essential nature is to just be.

The Importance Of Listening

Even more important is to listen. Being authentic means more than speaking your mind, it means giving others space to do the same. Yes, even if you don’t like what they have to say. They will learn to take you more seriously if you do the same.

Wrapping It Up

Finally, only say what you mean. Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no. That will keep you from making promises and that you can’t keep, which is a sure way to lose authenticity points.
