Confidence: 3 Simple Steps To Unleash It

Confidence

Many of us struggle with confidence. The fact that celebrity is thrown in our faces constantly and seemingly anyone with a webcam and no inhibitions can become a millionaire while most of us keep working the same 40hr a week job can sap your confidence. The ensuing lack of confidence can affect your relationships and kill your ambition, leaving you even more stuck where you are. You settle for less than you are worth and start to just coast through life.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.”

Eleanor RooseveltFirst Lady of the United States

Let me tell you; that is one of the worst things you can do. Once you just go on autopilot you are nearly giving up on life. This is the part where you ask what my big solution is.

The most obvious solution is simple – take risks. I don’t mean go try skydiving or taking a trip to South America to go down in a shark cage as pretend bait for a bunch of Great White sharks. What I’m getting at is something deeper.

Dare To Dream

If that opening paragraph really sounds like you, then you have a dream. I don’t know what it is but you have one. Specifically, something at the core of your being. Something you wish you could do all the time. Maybe it’s a new idea, maybe it’s a thought that has been building in the back of your mind for years. Perhaps it is something you regret never having tried. Whatever the case, it’s there, burning a hole in your mind, struggling to get out before it goes out. Yet, you are afraid of wrecking the good, unfulfilling situation you are in. You are afraid of being criticized, ridiculed, of failing. And in the end, you don’t have the confidence to try anything and risk whatever happens next.

Now, especially if you are very introverted, this will be difficult. If you are an introvert, don’t necessarily try to go out and start that publishing company you have always dreamed about. Not as step one. Start smaller, try offering your services as a reader. Build your confidence in other ways, talking to people you normally might shy away from, express your unpopular opinion. Small steps will add up after a while and the next thing will come easier than the last.

“Confidence is going after Moby Dick in a rowboat and taking tartar sauce with you.”

Make A Plan & Meet Like-Minded People

Make a plan for your goal and break it up into smaller actions. Each one you meet will build your confidence for the next. Those little victories will make you hungrier for the big one at the end.

Another big thing is to talk to people who share similar passions and have similar confidence issues. You’ll learn from each other and boost each other’s confidence along the way.

To Sum It Up…

When it comes to building confidence, there are many approaches but they call come down to this:

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others.
  2. Have a plan.
  3. Get outside your comfort zone and do something new.

So long as you follow those guidelines, you’ll soon find that confidence to pursue your dreams.
